10.1.11 File Save
Previous Topic  Next Topic

It is extremely important to keep a Tape Backup (File Save) of your files. Do this every evening at the end of the business day. You should use a different tape for each day of the week that the business is open. Be sure that all ports are Logged Off.

To start the file save, insert a tape in the tape drive. If a port is not logged off, a warning message will appear:  "File Save should Not Be Run With Other Users Logged On". Enter a <C> and press <ENTER> to continue the file save while another port is logged on. When you are ready to start the file save, enter an <F> and press <ENTER> to perform the File Save.

The backup time is entered in Military Time (example 6:00pm = 18:00). To begin the file save immediately, just press <ENTER> without entering a time.

Once the File Save process has started, you may leave. When returning in the morning, check to make sure that the File Save went through successfully via the information that appears on the screen. After completed just press <ENTER> to return to the Main Menu.

If you receive the message, “Character count too large”, the tape did not verify.  In AP/PRO this message usually means that you have a bad tape or the tape drive is going bad. Use another tape and if the problem persists, it is probably a bad drive. A bad tape drive will also give you the message, “parity error”.

A File Save Verify Report will be sent to the System Printer. If the printer is off, turn it on and the report will start printing. The File Save Verify Report shows the time the File Save started, verified, and finished. There will be a list of accounts listed on the report in alphabetical order. There is also a list of accounts that were not backed up during the file save. If there are any errors please fax the report to the Perfection Software Support Department (800-766-7530).

The Daily Totals background process is checked during the File Save. Daily Totals is setup in the Daily Totals Menu (10.9)

There is a TCL utility program called SYSFILES. This program will run automatically in the nightly FILE-SAVE or can be run manually from TCL. The program will backup the following system files: MDS; DM,MD, USER-COLDSTART; PIBS; PROSCSI,CONTROL DRIVER; USERS. This will become very handy if these system files are lost and need to be replaced quickly.
