Backups are crucial and must be done regularly to maintain the most accurate data possible in the event of a hard drive failure. Below are a few things that you can check to make sure your backup is working correctly.
A copy of the Perfection Software system data is automatically saved in a folder called SAVES which is usually on the root of the drive where D3 is installed. It is usually in C:\SAVES\FS or D:\SAVES\FS. The FS file is updated when a backup is initiated through the system by doing a File Save (10.1.11). A File Save must be done manually or set to run on at a specific time in order for the new data to be copied to the FS file in the SAVES folder.
After the first part of the backup completes the first printout will let you know that the FS file has been updated correctly.
If this first report does not print, check and make sure that the printer works. It usually prints to printer 0. You can check the status by going into TCL from the main menu and check the file save report. At the colon <:> type FS.RPT and press <ENTER>. The output will show the last time a file-save was attempted and there should also be a line that has the time the file-save finished and whether or not the tape verified. Pressing Control - X will bring you back to a colon and then type M <ENTER> to get back to the Main Menu. If the tape did not verify or if there is no "file-save finished" then the backup might not have run correctly, please call Perfection Software if that is the case.
The file save which is done in 10.1.11 goes to a SAVES folder which contains an FS file and usually some backup FS files. This file contains a complete backup of all your data as of the time the file sale was run. They are used to restore your data in case of corrupt and in case of an emergency you can save this file to another Hard Drive or USB zip drive.
At the end of this first printout there is a warning to save the data on some sort of removable media. The second printout will print only if Perfection Software setup the entire backup process. If this part of the backup is being handled by your own computer tech, please make sure he or she is backing up the entire SAVES folder mentioned above after a File Save is run from the system to update the FS file with the new data. This part of the backup is important in the event that the data in the SAVES folder on the server is not accessible.
If there is any question on the validity of a backup or if you are not getting regular backups please call Perfection Software.
