Fixing Data Corruption in D3
Previous Topic  Next Topic
  1. Check for data corruption in DM by doing an FSCK.  Note the problem files.  Identify which files may be reindexed, and which need to be restored.

  1. Have them go to the main computer, and put in the tape for their last good backup.

  1. It is always a good idea to rename the FS (File Save) to something else in case you need to use it later.  Rename this using Windows Explorer to FS2 or the like.

  1. Next, have them open the backup program from the Desktop in Windows.  If it is Win2k do this: START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEMTOOLS>BACKUP

  1. The backup program will open up and it defaults to the hard drive and not the tape drive.  There will be two buttons in the upper right, if the RESTORE button is grayed out then minimize the DRIVES window and you will see a TAPES windows minimized behind it.  Put in the tape and maximize this window.  The RESTORE button should become available.

  1. When the tape is in and the window for TAPES is maximized on the screen, click on OPERATIONS at the top and then CATALOG.  (If it has Catalog Grayed out then bring up the DRIVES window and then do the catalog it will see the tape drive.)  The program will begin cataloging the tape and after about 10 minutes the file structure will appear.  There should be two data sets in the left hand window pane.  They will be C: Data Set 1 and D: Data Set 2.  You are interested in the D: Data SET.  Have them Double click the D: and it will, again, open up the file system on that SET when it is finished reading it from the tape (approx 15-30 depending on the size.).  It will say tape rewinding when this is occurring.  If you do not have a D: drive on the computer (newer customers) then use C: instead.

  1. When it is finished cataloging the D: drive you should see the SAVES folder on the left and right hand side of the Window.  Double click the right SAVES folder on the right hand side and the FS file should be seen in the right hand side when it opens.  Next to the FS file (to its left) there will be a small rectangle where they can click to add a check-mark.  Have them check this box and then click the RESTORE button in the upper left.

  1. Another GUI screen appears to designate where the file is going. Accept the defaults, and be sure the customer does not click on RESTORE REGISTRY.  That box should not be checked.

  1. Accept the defaults and then click OK to restore.

  1. It will then restore the FS file to the C:\SAVES directory.

  1. Go into EXPLORER and rename this file to something else so you have a backup saved and the file save at night does not write over it.

  1. Create a tape device for the new FS you are using if you have renamed it.  Otherwise use the FS tape device in the T-SELECT.  (Example: DEV-MAKE T TAPE A D:\SAVES\FS2,P and hit enter.)

  1. The corrupted file may either be fixed by truncating while executing an FSCK or they may have to be deleted and sel-restored.  To sel-restore see the sel-restore document.  To check for new rebuild programs go to TCL and type SORT UTIL.PGM = REB] and <ENTER>.  To rebuild a corrupted file use one of the following rebuild programs:

REBUILD.BILLTO.XREF

REBUILD.CUST.NOF

REBUILD.FMAIL

REBUILD.HOLD.XREF

REBUILD.INVOICELIST

REBUILD.IPH.RCV.NO

REBUILD.LS

REBUILD.LSD

REBUILD.ORD.INV.DATE

REBUILD.ORDER.DATED

REBUILD.POINT.XREF

REBUILD.POINTS

REBUILD.PP.TREE

REBUILD.PURCH.QTY

REBUILD.QOO

REBUILD.SETUP

REBUILD.TRANS.TYPE.XREF

  1. After rebuilding the file and/or deleting the corrupted file, restore it using the sel-restore.  The file will copy over the existing file if it is there (such as the ORDER file) or you can completely delete the corrupted file and recreate it, then restore the items into it from the FS.  (Example: DF MFR and hit <ENTER>.  Or CF MFR 1 11 and hit <ENTER>.)

  1. After the files are either rebuilt or restored, run another FSCK in DM to be sure it is clean.
