5.5.1 Set Up Popularity Codes
Previous Topic  Next Topic

The first step in using Popularity Codes is to assign percentages to each of them. The percentages of all the Popularity Codes must add up to 100%. The program will rank each Part Number by the Quantity Sold to determine its Popularity Code.

The following are the Popularity Codes, in descending order:  A (fastest), B, C, D (Slowest), N = New, O (Obsolete), S (Superseded). The Obsolete and Superseded Part Numbers are not assigned percentages, but are assigned by the system.

1 - 4. There are four Popularity Codes that are assigned percentages: A, B, C, or D.

5. You may set the calculation to ignore Quantity Sold less than or equal to zero. These parts will not be included in the calculation, report or update of Popularity Codes. They will be completely excluded.

6. You have the option to specify the percentage of the Lost Sale to use in the calculation of the Popularity Code.  The valid entries are 0 to 100.

7. Multi-location systems can consolidate the Sales History of all Locations into one entry for the calculation of Popularity Codes.  All Locations will then be updated with the same Popularity Codes. The “Popularity Code Report” (5.5.3) will then show the cumulative Order Level, Stock Level, Quantity on Hand and Quantity on Order amounts of all Locations.

8. You have the option to enter the Number of Days from Creation Date to ignore New Part Numbers during calculation. Valid entry is from 0-999. The user determines what constitutes "new".

Helpful Hint:  You may want to set all your part numbers with Quantity Sold less than or equal to zero as D movers. You can accomplish this by doing the following steps:

  1. Set D to 100%.
  2. Answer “No” to “Ignore Quantity Sold <=0.”
  3. Calculate Popularity Codes. Now all you parts are set to D.
  4. Set the A, B, and C codes how you want them.
  5. Set the D code to zero (0).
  6. Answer “Yes” to “Ignore Quantity Sold <=0.”
  7. Calculate Popularity Codes. This will evaluate only those part numbers with a Quantity Sold and set them to A, B, or C Popularity Codes. All others will be D movers.

You should only have to run these steps once a year.

9. Lock Pop Code L From Being Recalculated - Enter <Y> to prevent Units of Measure that have been assigned Pop Code <L> from being recalculated.

Setup pop code <L> in Inventory Entry (5.1.1) Popularity Code (field 19).

This setting protects part number units of measure that have been manually set to pop code <L> from being changed when pop codes are calculated (5.5.2).
