Find the computer name of the PC that is connected directly to the printer. This is found by right clicking on MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES and click on COMPUTER NAME tab. The name will appear next to FULL COMPUTER NAME. Then you will need to share the printer by right clicking on the printer and select SHARE or SHARING and select SHARE THIS PRINTER. Give the printer a simple name like “REPORT” or “INVOICE” and click APPLY and OK.
On the server, Go into START>SETTINGS>PRINTERS or PRINTERS and FAXES
Double click ADD PRINTER. On the ADD PRINTER WIZARD click NEXT. Choose LOCAL PRINTER and click NEXT
Check the radio button that reads CREATE A NEW PORT. Click the drop down box and choose LOCAL PORT then click NEXT.
A smaller window comes up asking you to ENTER A PORT NAME. This is where you would enter the computer name and the shared name. It must be typed in the following format: \\JOEXP\REPORT. In this example, JOEXP is the computer name and REPORT is the name you put in when you shared the printer. It is important to type this exactly how the example is typed with different computer and printer names.
The next window will let you choose the Manufacturer and the Printer Model. Highlight the appropriate boxes in each box (be sure to scroll down in order to see all of the options) then click NEXT.
The printer name should appear automatically in the box labeled PRINTER NAME, which should be the same name that was used for PRINTER NAME in step 5. If you would like Windows applications to print to this printer such as Word documents, check the radio button that reads DEFAULT PRINTER and click NEXT.
Check the radio button that reads DO NOT SHARE THIS PRINTER and click NEXT.
The next window will ask if you would like to print a test page. Check the radio button that says YES and click NEXT.
At this point, you can review your options and go back to change them if necessary. If the test page did not print, check all cables, make sure the paper is in correctly and turn the printer off and back on again and try again.
