D3NT File Save and Restore Procedure
Previous Topic  Next Topic
  1. NOTE: Files saves used for this procedure done on the Perfection System are not those done by WINDOWS.  You will not be using a physical tape, but you will be using a Pseudo Tape done on the hard drive.  D3 backups for Perfection Software write to the hard drive, not to a physical tape.  Please keep this in mind when at step 11.

  1. To effectively do a file save and restore in D3/NT:

  1. From the Main Menu type in TCL and hit ENTER.   Type in RESIZE.ALL and hit ENTER.   Allow the system to reconfigure the files and resize them for the save and restore which will take place in the next steps.

  1. Do a FILE SAVE and be sure no one else is on the system from this point onward until you have completed this.

  1. On the Main Server, from the Main Menu, type DM and hit ENTER.

  1. At the : type in POWER-OFF and hit ENTER.

  1. When it asks you, Do you want to continue, say Y for YES.

  1. When Accuterm shuts down, hit CANCEL each time the dialogue box appears (which should be twice).

  1. Then close Accuterm, and double-click the icon for SERVICES. Make sure the line status for D3 Virtual Machine Environment is blank .  If it is not blank, be sure to highlight it then click STOP.  If it has stopped then close the SERVICES box.

  1. Go to the START button and then RUN and then type in CMD and hit ENTER.  This will open a DOS window. (You may have an icon on your desktop which you can double-click to open a command prompt. If not, then do the previous.)

  1. Type in D: and hit <ENTER> .  Then type CD Program Files\D3\D3PROGRAMS  (Make sure to replace the correct drive letter for your situation, though it is usually the D: drive. You have to type D: first to get to the D: drive.)  (If there is a problem with typing this in, then type each directory separately. Example: CD Program Files and <ENTER> CD D3 and <ENTER> etcIf there continues to be a problem with this, then check the drive letter.  Most D3 systems that Perfection Software installs have all of the files and directories on the D: drive.  If this is not the case then you are responsible for using WINDOWS Explorer and find out where the files reside before going any further.  It may be that the programs are on the C: drive instead.)

  1. At this new prompt (D:\Program Files\D3\D3PROGRAMS:) type in the following command: D3VME /FILELOAD  (There is a space after the E of D3VME)   Type a Y to proceed.  It may ask you to Disable file allocation and you can answer N for NO.  It will then prompt you for a tape device.

  1. Select the tape device that contains the file-save.

NOTE: The tape device may have to be created in the D3/NT Device Manager. (see below)  It is recommended to use the path of the file save which can become a predefined pseudo floppy. (DO NOT ever use T-SELECT 1 since this contains the original data set.)  If you need to create a pseudo floppy in device manager, hit enter here at the question and then hit q to quit.  Leave the DOS window open and go to the taskbar and click on START>PROGRAMS>D3>DEVICE MANAGER.  (Note: some systems have START>PROGRAMS>D3UTILITIES>DEVICE MANAGER as the path either one will work fine.)   When the box opens click on the VME Tape Devices tab.  In the left box click Pseudo Tape and in the right box highlight the next available line and browse the directory until you find the file save in the saves folder on your hard drive (If you are unable to do this, then contact your system administrator for help in using WINDOWS EXPLOER.)  Then click ADD,  The device will be added and you can close the dialogue box.  Back in the DOS window you will have to execute the D3VME /FILELOAD command again (Step 10). Then go on to the next step.)

  1. It will ask you to hit C to continue.  It will then restore the file save previously done on the pseudo floppy which you have created or chosen.

  1. It will ask you to restore from incremental tape, or transaction log answer n to both questions.  It will wrap up processes and then ask you to enter you PICK user ID.  Close the DOS window and it will end the task session.  Click on Services and start the D3 Virtual Machine.  After the D3VME is started, you need to reindex the system.

  1. Go to the main menu and type in DM and hit <ENTER>.  Then type in INDEXER at the colon and hit <ENTER>.  Allow the system to reindex.

  1. When this is finished, everyone will be able to begin working.
